Cariboo Gate Foundation

Safe sanitation, built by trainees.

A sealed block-work septic tank and latrine block, sited away from water sources and built by masonry trainees under supervision.

  • Status Completed 2025
  • Budget $9,800
  • People served 650
  • Location Bweyale, Kiryandongo
  • Timeline 2024–2025
The need

Why this matters.

Where latrines are scarce and shared by dozens of households, disease spreads quickly — especially in the rains. Safe sanitation is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect children's health.

Properly sited and sealed tanks also protect nearby wells and boreholes from contamination.

What we're building

The plan.

A sealed block-work septic tank with a cover slab, connected to a latrine block and sited well away from water sources. Masonry trainees did the block-work under supervision, gaining real site experience.

Who benefits

  • Households that previously shared overcrowded latrines
  • Children, who are most at risk from sanitation-related illness
  • Masonry trainees who built it and gained site experience

Accountability

How your gift is protected.

  • Written agreement

Every project has a signed agreement with Bweyale Vocational Education covering scope, budget, timeline and reporting.

  • Staged payments

Money is released phase by phase, only after the previous phase has been inspected and the receipts checked.

  • Evidence, not promises

Site photos, inspection notes and receipts arrive with each payment request and are reviewed by our board.

  • Open reporting

Funders get quarterly updates. Everything is summarized in our annual report and public CRA filings.

We follow the Canada Revenue Agency's guidance for charities that fund work through a partner abroad: due diligence, a written agreement, staged payments and regular reporting.

From the field

Latest updates.

  1. Six-month inspection passed

The tank, vent and cover were inspected and found sound; no leaks or odour complaints.

  2. Hygiene champions appointed

Households chose four volunteers to promote handwashing and report problems.

  3. Tank commissioned

The latrine block opened after a final inspection.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

Is it safe for nearby water?

The tank is sealed and sited at a safe distance from wells and boreholes, following the design reviewed before construction.

Who built it?

Local workers and masonry trainees, supervised by a qualified mason — so the project doubled as practical training.

Will I get a tax receipt?

Yes. Eligible gifts of $20 or more receive an official donation receipt. If your company would like visible recognition beyond a thank-you, we treat the payment as a sponsorship instead — the partner page explains the difference.

What if the phase I fund is already covered?

Extra gifts go to the next phase of the same project unless you tell us otherwise. We will never redirect a designated gift to a different project without asking you first.

Fund the next phase

Help us start Second block + handwashing stations.

Phase 5 needs $5,550 more to get under way (Early 2027). Every gift, whatever the size, goes into finished and inspected work.
