Two ways to give — different tax treatment.
Canadian tax rules treat a gift and a sponsorship differently. We'll help you choose the right one; your accountant can confirm what works best for your company.
OPTION ACorporate donation
- What it is
- A gift with nothing of significant value given in return.
- What you receive
- An official donation receipt for the eligible amount of the gift.
- Tax treatment
- Corporations can generally deduct eligible gifts, up to 75% of net income in a year.
- Recognition
- A thank-you and a listing among our supporters — not advertising.
OPTION BSponsorship
- What it is
- A business arrangement where you receive visibility or marketing benefits.
- What you receive
- An invoice or business acknowledgment — not a donation receipt.
- Tax treatment
- Often deductible as an advertising or promotional expense when incurred to earn income.
- Recognition
- Logo placement, co-branded impact stories, event or project naming.
OPTION CA mix of both
- What it is
- A gift where you receive a modest, measurable benefit.
- What you receive
- A split receipt: the payment minus the fair market value of the benefit.
- Good to know
- Never claim the same amount as both an expense and a gift.
- Recognition
- Agreed in writing up front, so there are no surprises.
General information only, not tax advice. Based on Canada Revenue Agency guidance on gifts, advantages and split receipting.
