Cariboo Gate Foundation

A place to learn, one wall at a time.

A permanent four-classroom block, built in four phases from the ground up — with desks made by our own carpentry graduates.

  • Status Phase 2 of 4 · building
  • Budget $46,000
  • People served 480 children
  • Location Bweyale, Kiryandongo
  • Timeline 2025–2027
The need

Why this matters.

Children in the settlement often study in overcrowded or temporary classrooms, and in the rains lessons can stop altogether. A durable building gives them a place to learn that doesn't depend on the weather.

Education is one of the strongest protections for young people — especially girls — and for a community rebuilding its future.

What we're building

The plan.

A permanent four-classroom block in brick on a reinforced foundation, with a roof of timber trusses and iron sheets, ventilation windows and lockable doors. Furniture will be made by our carpentry graduates, and construction crews include masonry trainees.

Who benefits

  • 480 children who currently share crowded, temporary classrooms
  • Teachers who will have a safe, dry place to work
  • Local builders and trainees employed during construction

Accountability

How your gift is protected.

  • Written agreement

Every project has a signed agreement with Bweyale Vocational Education covering scope, budget, timeline and reporting.

  • Staged payments

Money is released phase by phase, only after the previous phase has been inspected and the receipts checked.

  • Evidence, not promises

Site photos, inspection notes and receipts arrive with each payment request and are reviewed by our board.

  • Open reporting

Funders get quarterly updates. Everything is summarized in our annual report and public CRA filings.

We follow the Canada Revenue Agency's guidance for charities that fund work through a partner abroad: due diligence, a written agreement, staged payments and regular reporting.

From the field

Latest updates.

  1. Walls reach window height

Crews finished the lower courses on all four classrooms and began lintels. Inspection by the partner's site engineer passed.

  2. Foundation phase complete

The slab was signed off after inspection, and funds for walls were released.

  3. Site visit with local council

Our partner met the local council and school committee to confirm plans and responsibilities.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

Who will run the school?

The school will be run with the local education authority and the community's school management committee. Cariboo Gate funds construction only.

Why build in phases?

So every dollar goes into finished, inspected work, and so we can pause safely between phases if funding or conditions change.

Will I get a tax receipt?

Yes. Eligible gifts of $20 or more receive an official donation receipt. If your company would like visible recognition beyond a thank-you, we treat the payment as a sponsorship instead — the partner page explains the difference.

What if the phase I fund is already covered?

Extra gifts go to the next phase of the same project unless you tell us otherwise. We will never redirect a designated gift to a different project without asking you first.

Fund the next phase

Help us start Roof structure & iron sheets.

Phase 3 needs $7,650 more to get under way (Starts early 2027). Every gift, whatever the size, goes into finished and inspected work.
